A research study by Prevent Blindness America showed that over 700,000 Americans suffer eye injuries on the job each year. In addition, another 125,000 people injure their eyes at home, not to mention the countless eye injuries that go unreported.

Grinding and welding are the two most common causes of eye injury. Industries such as construction and manufacturing, and to a lesser extent the agriculture, forestry, mining, and fishing industries, appear to be those where workers commonly sustain eye injuries. Many of these eye injuries occur when the workers were not wearing appropriate eye protection.

Safety glasses are not regular glasses and regular glasses are not a replacement for safety glasses. One major difference in these two products are its material. Some safety glasses are made with similar materials used for jet windshields. The chances of them shattering on impact is slim to none, as they are built and tested to withstand high impact projectiles. Normal glasses are sturdy and built for everyday wear, but are made of acetate which is not enough to protect your eyes. Another difference is that regular prescription glasses do not offer 360 coverage that safety glasses do.
